Educational Q&A

The verse highlights how motives behind actions matter in dharma: Bhishma’s initiative is framed not as personal desire but as a duty-driven undertaking for his brother, emphasizing family responsibility and ethical intention.

In the Udyoga Parva’s diplomatic and preparatory context, Bhishma is quoted as clarifying (or reporting what he has heard) that Bhishma does not seek “me” personally; rather, his enterprise was undertaken for his brother’s sake, specifically connected with arranging a marriage alliance.
