Bhishma said: “O king, O mother who loves her son, today I am your attendant and your servant.” Then, again with folded hands, I spoke humbly to please my mother: “Mother, I am born of King Shantanu and I bear the honor and discipline of the Kuru line; therefore I cannot make my vowed promise false.” I repeated this again and again. Then I added: “O son-loving mother, it was especially for your sake that I made this vow. I am your servant and your slave—do not ask me to break my pledge.”

The passage emphasizes dharma as fidelity to a solemn vow (pratijñā). Bhishma frames personal desire and even emotional pressure as secondary to the integrity of one’s pledged word and the honor-code (maryādā) of the Kuru lineage.
Bhishma, speaking to the king, recounts how he repeatedly and respectfully addressed his mother with folded hands, declaring himself her servant, yet refusing to violate the vow he had undertaken—stating that he upholds the Kuru family’s established honor and cannot render his promise false.
