Gālava’s Despair and Resolve to Seek Viṣṇu
ekataḥ śyāmakarṇānāṃ hayānāṃ candravarcasām | aṣṭau śatāni me dehi gaccha gālava mā ciram ||
The verse highlights disciplined obedience and perseverance under a guru’s stern testing. A difficult demand can function as a crucible for commitment, while also warning that insistence and impatience can provoke anger and harden conditions.
Nārada narrates that Gālava repeatedly urges Viśvāmitra, who then—angered—sets a formidable requirement: Gālava must procure eight hundred moon-bright horses with one dark ear, and must do so without delay.
