The verse frames the central problem of human existence—fear arising from grief, suffering, and death—and requests a dharmic instruction that removes these fears at their root, pointing toward inner steadiness and a liberating understanding rather than merely external remedies.
In the Śānti Parva’s instruction sequence, Yudhiṣṭhira addresses Bhīṣma as ‘Grandfather’ and asks for guidance: since all beings fear sorrow, pain, and death, Bhīṣma should teach a way by which such fear does not arise for them.
