Adhyāya 284: Tapas as a Corrective to Household Attachment
Parāśara’s Instruction
parituṣṭo ’smi te dakṣa stavena anena suvrata | bahunātra kim uktena matsamīpe bhaviṣyasi ||
Sincere praise offered with disciplined conduct (suvrata) is acknowledged as ethically potent: it earns the elder’s approval and results in closeness to the source of guidance, symbolized by ‘dwelling near me.’
Bhīṣma responds to Dakṣa’s hymn of praise, declares himself pleased, and grants a concise assurance—rather than elaborate speech—that Dakṣa will remain in Bhīṣma’s proximity, implying favor, protection, and continued access to instruction.
