Apaddharma Determination: Dialogue of Viśvāmitra and the Śvapaca
ब्रवीषि मधुरं यच्च प्रियो मे5द्य भवानिति
bravīṣi madhuraṁ yac ca priyo me ’dya bhavān iti |
ভীষ্ম ক’লে—“তুমি যি মধুৰ বাক্য কোৱা—‘আজি তুমি মোৰ অতি প্ৰিয়’—তাৰো কাৰণ আছে, বন্ধু! সেই সকলো মই বিস্তাৰে ক’ম; শুনা। কাৰণৰ বাবেই মানুহ প্ৰীতিপাত্ৰ হয়, আৰু কাৰণৰ বাবেই দ্বেষপাত্ৰ হয়।”
भीष्म उवाच
Bhishma teaches that affection and hostility are not random: people become loved or hated due to identifiable causes—conduct, qualities, and reasons that can be examined ethically.
In the Shanti Parva’s instruction-setting, Bhishma responds to a listener’s flattering statement (“you are dear to me today”) and frames it as something explainable by reasons, promising a detailed account of why love and hatred arise.
