Veda-grounded virtues (śrutimaya guṇas) and disciplined austerity (tapas) elevate a person’s character and spiritual stature, leading to recognition not merely by power or birth but by conduct and inner refinement.
Bhishma describes a figure who, staying in a certain place, undertakes austerities while embodying Vedic virtues; as a result he becomes comparable to divine seers and gains broad acceptance and honor among the Brahmanas.
