The verse urges steadiness of mind while hearing or recounting painful truths. It frames the ethical posture of a listener: to receive an account of mass violence with composure, not denial—suggesting disciplined attention and emotional restraint in the face of tragedy.
Sañjaya addresses the king (Dhṛtarāṣṭra) and begins a detailed report of a devastating battle, emphasizing the immense destruction among elephants, horses, and human warriors, and asks the king to listen calmly.
