ahaṁ deśe tu karasmiṁśvacit puṇye niyamam āsthitaḥ
The verse highlights niyama—self-imposed discipline and regulated conduct—as a dharmic means of inner purification. Ethical strength is shown not only through action in crisis but also through sustained restraint and observance undertaken in a sacred context.
Vasudeva begins a first-person recollection, stating that he was residing in a holy place while observing a vow. This sets the scene for the account that follows, grounding his forthcoming words in a context of austerity and religious discipline.
