Jayadrathasya śoka-bhaya-vilāpaḥ — Droṇena āśvāsanaṃ ca
Jayadratha’s lament and Droṇa’s reassurance
pavitram arisaṅghaghnaṁ maṅgalānāṁ ca maṅgalam | yathaiva vedādhyayanam upākhyānam idaṁ tathā ||
The verse elevates the ethical and purifying power of sacred narrative: hearing/reciting an instructive upākhyāna is presented as spiritually efficacious—bringing auspiciousness and overcoming hostility—comparable in value to Vedic study.
Vyāsa, as narrator, praises the upākhyāna being told, framing it as a sanctifying and protective discourse and asserting its authority and merit by likening it to the discipline of studying the Vedas.
