Even in the midst of righteous duty (dharma) and martial skill, the mind is affected by foreknowledge, omens, and personal destiny; ethical action in war is not merely physical combat but also the struggle to remain steady when confronted by fear, foreboding, and the consequences of past causes.
Sañjaya describes Droṇa seeing Dhṛṣṭadyumna standing before him. Because Dhṛṣṭadyumna is associated with Droṇa’s impending downfall, his very appearance is treated as inauspicious, and Droṇa’s mood instantly turns from confidence to visible displeasure and gloom.
