Adhyāya 107 —
Multiple Defensive Engagements to Protect Bhīṣma
tataḥ pravavṛte yuddhaṁ tumulaṁ lomaharṣaṇam | pāṇḍavānāṁ kurūṇāṁ ca samare vijayaiṣiṇām ||
The verse highlights how the pursuit of victory (vijaya) can intensify conflict into terrifying violence. Ethically, it frames war as a realm where desire-driven aims collide with dharma, reminding the listener that even duty-bound combat carries grave human and moral cost.
Sañjaya reports to Dhṛtarāṣṭra that a fierce, chaotic battle has fully erupted between the Pāṇḍava and Kuru forces, both intent on winning. It signals an escalation into a sustained, fearsome engagement on the battlefield.
