Uttanka’s Guru-Śuśrūṣā and the Commission to Retrieve the Maṇikuṇḍalas (उत्तङ्क-गुरुशुश्रूषा तथा मणिकुण्डल-आदेशः)

चाण्डालरूपी भगवान्‌ सुमहांस्ते व्यतिक्रम: । यत्‌ तु शक्‍्यं मया कर्तु भूय एव तवेप्सितम्‌

cāṇḍālarūpī bhagavān sumahāṁs te vyatikramaḥ | yat tu śakyaṁ mayā kartuṁ bhūya eva tavepsitam ||

উত্তঙ্কে ক’লে—“চাণ্ডালৰ ৰূপ ধৰা ভগৱান ইন্দ্ৰক প্ৰত্যাখ্যান কৰা তোমাৰ বাবে অতি গম্ভীৰ অপৰাধ। তথাপি তোমাৰ ইচ্ছা পূৰ্ণ কৰিবলৈ মোৰ সাধ্য অনুসাৰে যি কৰিব পাৰি, মই পুনৰো সেই কৰিম।”

Educational Q&A

Do not judge worth by outward appearance or social markers; a grave ethical lapse occurs when one rejects a worthy being (even a deity) based on form. Dharma requires discernment, restraint, and readiness to correct one’s mistake through renewed right effort.

Uttanka points out that Indra appeared in the guise of a Caṇḍāla and that rejecting him was a serious offense. He then reassures the other party that he will attempt once more to do whatever he can to accomplish the desired aim.
