The verse warns that a life marked by inertia (lack of righteous effort), greed, denial of dharma, and avoidance of charity leads to a painful post-mortem consequence (niraya). It elevates dāna and moral faith as essential supports of ethical living.
Śrī Maheśvara addresses Devī, describing a class of people defined by greed, irreligion, and refusal to give. He states the karmic outcome for such conduct, continuing the Anuśāsana Parva’s instruction on dharma and right behavior.
