Ādi-parva Adhyāya 3 — Janamejaya’s Rite, Dhaumya’s Parīkṣā, and Uttanka’s Kuṇḍala Quest

sā tayā kruddhayā tatrokto—‘ayaṃ me putro na kiñcid aparādhyati; nāvekṣate haviṃṣi, nāvalēḍhi; kimartham abhihataḥ?’ iti.

Educational Q&A

Do not punish without fault: dharma requires careful inquiry, proportional response, and protection of the innocent—even when guarding sacred ritual property.

Saramā confronts King Janamejaya after her son has been struck. She argues that the boy did not even glance at or lick the sacrificial offerings, so the beating was unjustified.
