A dynasty endures when its rulers actively protect it through dharma—ethical governance, restraint, and responsibility. Bhīṣma links the survival of the family line to the presence of dharma-knowing, noble kings.
Bhīṣma reflects on the past: earlier righteous kings safeguarded the family, and because of that protection the lineage did not become extinct. The statement functions as a reminder of ancestral standards and the duty to preserve the kula through dharmic conduct.
