An Exposition of the Distinctions of Creation, Inert Matter, and the Lord

तत्र मे संशयो ह्यस्ति शृणु त्वं सात्त्वतां पते / यद्राश्यां यद्रा शिभागा ह्यधिकाः संति यावता

tatra me saṃśayo hyasti śṛṇu tvaṃ sāttvatāṃ pate / yadrāśyāṃ yadrā śibhāgā hyadhikāḥ saṃti yāvatā

Garuḍa (Vinata-putra), questioning Lord Viṣṇu

Concept: Epistemic humility and structured inquiry: asking where (which sign) and how much (extent) predominance occurs—linking guṇa theory with jyotiṣa-like partitioning.

Vedantic Theme: Right questioning (samyak-praśna) as a doorway to knowledge; the cosmos as intelligible order reflecting prakṛti’s modalities.

Application: When learning complex systems (mind/behavior/cycles), ask ‘where’ and ‘to what degree’ rather than binary labels; keep a journal of dominant tendencies across time/cycles.

Primary Rasa: adbhuta

Secondary Rasa: shanta

Type: cosmic map

FAQs

This verse introduces Garuḍa’s technical doubt about which rāśis and their subdivisions are considered more influential, setting up Viṣṇu’s explanation of astrological/cosmological ordering used for interpretation.

Indirectly: it frames a discussion of cosmic divisions (rāśi and their parts) that traditional texts use to map time, fate, and ritual timing—background knowledge often connected to life events and post-death rites, though this particular verse is a question rather than a description of the soul’s journey.

It encourages careful inquiry before applying astrological or ritual rules—seek clear sources and competent guidance when using jyotiṣa-related calculations for dharmic decisions and rites.
