Parīkṣit’s Vow on the Gaṅgā and the Advent of Śukadeva Gosvāmī
तस्यैव मेऽघस्य परावरेशो व्यासक्तचित्तस्य गृहेष्वभीक्ष्णम् । निर्वेदमूलो द्विजशापरूपो यत्र प्रसक्तो भयमाशु धत्ते ॥ १४ ॥
tasyaiva me ’ghasya parāvareśo vyāsakta-cittasya gṛheṣv abhīkṣṇam nirveda-mūlo dvija-śāpa-rūpo yatra prasakto bhayam āśu dhatte
পৰ আৰু অপৰ জগতৰ নিয়ন্তা ভগৱানে গৃহাসক্ত মোৰ চিত্তৰ এই দোষক দ্বিজৰ শাপৰূপে কৃপাৰে মোৰ ওপৰত আনিছে। মোক উদ্ধাৰ কৰিবলৈ তেওঁ এনেদৰে প্ৰকাশ পাইছে যে ভয়ৰ দ্বাৰাই মই শীঘ্ৰে সংসাৰৰ পৰা বৈৰাগ্য লাভ কৰোঁ।
Mahārāja Parīkṣit, although born in a family of great devotees, the Pāṇḍavas, and although securely trained in transcendental attachment for the association of the Lord, still found the allurement of mundane family life so strong that he had to be detached by a plan of the Lord. Such direct action is taken by the Lord in the case of a special devotee. Mahārāja Parīkṣit could understand this by the presence of the topmost transcendentalists in the universe. The Lord resides with His devotees, and therefore the presence of the great saints indicated the presence of the Lord. The King therefore welcomed the presence of the great ṛṣis as a mark of favor of the Supreme Lord.
It teaches that fear often arises exactly where we are most attached, and that the Lord can use such fear as a merciful intervention to awaken detachment and spiritual seriousness.
Parīkṣit sees beyond the external event (a brāhmaṇa’s curse) and recognizes divine supervision—understanding the calamity as the Lord’s corrective grace meant to free him from repeated household absorption.
Use crises as a moment for introspection: identify where attachment is strongest, reduce over-dependence on temporary supports, and redirect the mind toward lasting spiritual practice and remembrance of Bhagavān.
