Jaṭilāvatāra-Parīkṣā: Pārvatyāḥ Tapasāṃ Parīkṣaṇam
The Jaṭilā Episode and the Testing of Pārvatī’s Austerity
प्रसन्नोस्मि दृढं भक्त्या शिवे तव विशेषतः । चित्तेप्सितं वरं ब्रूहि नादेयं विद्यते तव
prasannosmi dṛḍhaṃ bhaktyā śive tava viśeṣataḥ | cittepsitaṃ varaṃ brūhi nādeyaṃ vidyate tava
إني راضٍ حقًّا—وخاصةً بثبات محبتكِ التعبدية لشيفا. فقولي النعمة التي يتوق إليها قلبكِ؛ فليس لكِ شيءٌ لا يُمنَح.
Lord Shiva
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Sadāśiva
Shakti Form: Pārvatī
Role: liberating
The verse highlights that unwavering bhakti to Śiva draws His grace, where divine favor arises from devotion and culminates in the granting of what supports the devotee’s spiritual aim.
It reflects Saguna Śiva’s compassionate responsiveness: through personal worship—such as Linga-upāsanā—Śiva becomes ‘pleased’ and bestows grace in the form of boons aligned with dharma and devotion.
The takeaway is steadfast bhakti expressed through regular Śiva-pūjā—japa of the Pañcākṣarī (Om Namaḥ Śivāya), and traditional observances like bhasma (tripuṇḍra) and rudrākṣa as supports for focused devotion.
