Upamanyu’s Longing for Milk and the Doctrine of Shiva’s Grace
madbhakto bhava viprarṣe māmevārcaya sarvadā | dadāmi sarvaṃ bhadrante tyaja rudraṃ ca nirguṇam
Lord Shiva (Rudra)
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Rudra
Significance: Affirms the Siddhānta emphasis on accessible worship (arcana) as a grace-bearing path: the Lord’s anugraha is mediated through devotion and ritual engagement, not mere abstraction.
Type: stotra
Role: teaching
Offering: pushpa
It teaches that steady bhakti (devotion) and constant worship of Shiva lead to all attainments, including liberation; the verse prioritizes lived devotion over merely conceptualizing Shiva as nirguṇa.
By saying “worship Me alone always,” it supports saguna upāsanā such as Shiva-linga archana as the practical means for grace; through this accessible form, the devotee is led toward the highest truth beyond qualities.
Regular Shiva archana—daily offering with mantra-japa (especially Panchakshara, Om Namaḥ Śivāya) and sustained remembrance—expressing exclusive devotion and reliance on Shiva’s grace.
