Dashati 2

Aindra-Soma: the generative power of Soma/Indra expressed as cosmic ‘milk/seed’ and as the authoritative Sāman tradition (Rathantara).

Deity

Indra (Aindra frame) in close union with Soma (Pavamāna) as the energizing prize-winning power of the rite.

Melodic Character

Radiant and expansive—moving from contained brightness (Soma ‘milk’) to wide authoritative proclamation (Rathantara).

Rishi Family

Vasiṣṭha (explicitly named in 2.0.02.05 as the establisher/bring-er of Rathantara).

Inside Dashati 2

Themes

  • Soma as luminous essence upheld in diverse ‘cows’ (ritual receptacles/waters/rays)
  • Cosmic generation through māyā as effective divine/ritual power (not illusion)
  • Pitṛs establishing the hidden ‘garbha’ (seed) of rite and lineage
  • Liturgical provenance of Sāmans: Rathantara ‘brought’ by Vasiṣṭha
  • Interlinking metre (Anuṣṭubh) and chant as ritual technology

The theology

Ritual efficacy: divine power (śakti/māyā) manifests as Soma’s brilliance and as transmitted chant-forms that ‘carry’ the sacrifice to its goal.

Why the deity is invoked

To empower the Soma-offering and its chant: Soma is clarified and upheld; Indra is strengthened to win the ‘vāja’; Savitṛ/Dhātṛ order and quicken the rite; Viṣṇu provides the ‘wide stride’/ritual extension; Pitṛs guarantee transmission of the hidden seed of sacrifice.

How the chant moves

Begins with imagery of sustaining and clarifying Soma, then widens into cosmological measurement across worlds, and culminates in explicit self-referential liturgy (naming/bringing the Rathantara) that seals the chant’s authority.

Stobhas

  • How they are usedIn practice this Aindra-Pavamāna/Rathantara neighborhood commonly uses elongations and linking stobhas to sustain ‘pratha’ (expansion) and to mark cadences.
  • What they doGenerally, stobhas in such Sāman contexts extend vowels, connect pādas, and stabilize melodic turns so the semantic mantra can be carried into a full gāna structure.
  • Their effectCreates expansiveness (pratha), sustained brilliance, and clear cadential markers—supporting both ecstatic praise and precise ritual timing.

Ritual phase

Soma-day chant sequence associated with Aindra stotras; the explicit Rathantara reference points to a stotra setting where Rathantara is deployed as a principal chant.

Rishi lineage

The dashati blends anonymous/uncertain RV-source verses with a clear Vasiṣṭha attribution, highlighting a ‘ṛṣi-provenance’ model: Sāmans are received and authorized through seer-lineage and Pitṛ transmission (garbha).

Frequently Asked Questions

It links Soma’s bright, sustaining essence with the cosmic ‘seed’ of the rite and with the authority of a key Sāman melody, Rathantara—showing how chant and offering work together to make the sacrifice effective.

No. In this Vedic context (and in Sāyaṇa’s reading), māyā is a wondrous, effective power—divine/ritual capability by which forms and results are produced.

The verse presents Rathantara as a transmitted liturgical form: Vasiṣṭha ‘brought/established’ it for sacrificial use, grounding the chant in seer-lineage and ritual provenance.
