Inside Sukta 66

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

Indra is sought and summoned as the discoverer of wealth and the immediate helper in the Soma-pressed sacrifice.

  2. Development

Praise intensifies: Indra’s vigorous guardian-force and wide-shaking energy are celebrated as delighting in right workings (vayuna), and he is urged to accept the hymn and advance with bright, many-colored intelligence.

  3. Climax

The hymn’s turning point is the call for Indra to come ‘forward with citrā dhī’—illumined thought that orders the paths—so divine force becomes effective in the rite and life.

  4. Where it settles

It ends with reassurance: Soma is pressed, fear should fall away, and wasting darkness departs of itself—dissolution cannot stand where delight and sacred energy are established.

The deity: Indra

  • In the VedaIndra is hailed as the mighty helper (ūtaye), the wealth-giver to be ‘found’ by victorious impulses, and the lord who responds to the Soma-pressed offering and the singers’ vast chant. He is portrayed as forceful, wide-shaking, and receptive to well-fashioned praise that arranges the ways (vayuna).
  • Cosmic functionHe upholds the victory of light and order by breaking obstructions, releasing powers and riches, and energizing the right movement of sacrifice and action.
  • Inner significanceIndra signifies awakened will and courageous clarity—the power in the seeker that confronts fear, disperses inner darkness, and turns inspired thought into effective action.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is a Soma-sacrifice hymn that calls Indra to come to the offering, accept the singers’ praise, and grant strength, protection, and prosperity while removing fear and darkness.

Because Indra is traditionally invited through the pressed Soma; the hymn treats Soma as the energizing delight that makes Indra’s power present and effective in the rite.

It means a bright, many-colored or richly illumined intelligence—an inspired clarity that ‘arranges the ways’ and helps right action succeed.
