Lakshmana Consoles Rama on Fate, Fortitude, and Right Action
duḥkhito hi bhavān lokāṁs tejasā yadi dhakṣyate |
ārtāḥ prajā naravyāghra kva nu yāsyanti nirvṛtim || 3.66.6 ||
O Rama, if you cannot bear this sorrow that has befallen you, how can weak and ordinary persons endure (such suffering)?
Dharma of restraint in power: a great person’s tejas must be governed, so that the innocent are not harmed by the ruler’s private grief.
Lakshmana warns that Rama’s uncontrolled anguish could have destructive consequences for the world.
Protective compassion coupled with self-control—strength that shields rather than scorches.
