Ravana Approaches Sita Disguised as a Mendicant
विशालं जघनं पीनमूरू करिकरोपमौ।।।।एतावुपचितौ वृत्तौ संहतौ सम्प्रवल्गितौ।पीनोन्नतमुखौ कान्तौ स्निग्धौ तालफलोपमौ।।।।मणिप्रवेकाभरणौ रुचिरौ ते पयोधरौ।
viśālaṃ jaghanaṃ pīnam ūrū karikaropamau | etāv upacitau vṛttau saṃhatau sampravalgitau | pīnon natamukhau kāntau snigdhau tālaphalopamau | maṇipravekābharaṇau rucirau te payodharau ||
وركاكِ عريضان ممتلئان، وفخذاكِ قويّان كخرطوم الفيل. وأمّا ثدياكِ—ناميان مستديران متقاربين ثقيلين—فهما بهيّان ناعمان كثمر النخل، مُحلَّيان بجواهر نفيسة، يزيدان حسنكِ بهاءً.
Your big hips are stout and strong, Your smooth thighs are like the trunk of an elephant, your breasts adorned with gems, are round and robust like palm fruits and drooping with heaviness with projected stiff nipples, shining and delightful, adding beauty.
The verse illustrates adharma: lustful speech and objectifying praise used as a tool of coercion, especially under a false religious guise—opposed to self-control (dama) and truthful conduct (satya).
After approaching Sītā in disguise, Rāvaṇa attempts to entice her through flattering and sensual descriptions.
Sītā’s virtue is implied by contrast: modesty, fidelity, and steadfastness—she is being tested by speech that violates restraint and respect.
