Viradha’s Challenge and the Clash in Dandaka
sa viddho nyasya vaidehīṃ śūlam udyamya rākṣasaḥ | abhyadravat susaṅkṛddhas tadā rāmaṃ sa-lakṣmaṇam ||3.3.14||
The demon who produced a great noise with his wide open mouth resembled the god of death. He lifted a sharp spike that looked like Indra's banner.
Dharma is seen in prioritizing protection of the vulnerable: the conflict centers on safeguarding Sītā while facing aggression.
After being wounded, the demon releases Sītā, arms himself with a spear, and charges at Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa.
Protective responsibility (rakṣaṇa-dharma) is emphasized—Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa stand as guardians while the aggressor abandons restraint.
