Mārkaṇḍeya
Concept: Spiritual attainment can coexist with subtle ego; true humility is tested when one’s status is ‘lowered’ by divine play.
Application: Notice defensiveness when corrected or addressed casually; treat it as a cue to soften ego and return to gratitude.

The speaker is the sage Mārkaṇḍeya. He questions who is calling him by name in a disrespectful manner and who is daring to slight his venerable, divinely-measured age.
It signals extraordinary longevity measured in “divine years,” a Purāṇic way of indicating vast time spans and the exalted status of certain sages; the phrase underscores why disrespect toward him is especially improper.
The verse highlights the dharmic value of respect in speech and conduct—especially toward elders and realized sages—and warns against arrogance expressed through casual or insulting address.
