An unnamed jñānī (wise/knowing person) responding after being addressed by Mṛkaṇḍu

Concept: A seeker must ask clearly, and a knower must answer truthfully and compassionately; truth about time (āyus) is part of dharmic counsel.

Application: When facing uncertainty, ask precise questions; receive difficult truths with steadiness and use them to reform priorities.

Primary Rasa: karuna

Secondary Rasa: shanta

Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"Mṛkaṇḍu, eyes moist yet steady, leans forward with folded hands, imploring the seer to state the exact number of years—few or many. The jñānī turns slightly, lips poised to speak, his expression a blend of compassion and inevitability, as if the words themselves carry weight like a mantra.","primary_figures":["Mṛkaṇḍu","the jñānī-sage"],"setting":"simple āśrama veranda with a low seat, palm-leaf manuscript bundle, and a quiet forest backdrop","lighting_mood":"temple lamp-lit","color_palette":["warm ochre","lamp gold","deep maroon","sage green","charcoal"],"tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore painting style: close, dialogue-focused composition—Mṛkaṇḍu pleading, seer about to speak; gold leaf halos and lamp glow, rich maroon-green textiles, ornate border with lotus filigree, gem-like highlights on ornaments and manuscript edges.","pahari_prompt":"Pahari miniature style: intimate two-figure scene with delicate expressions; warm lamp in corner casting soft light, fine linework on hands and eyes; subdued palette with lyrical forest beyond a veranda rail.","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala mural style: bold outlines emphasizing gesture—folded hands, speaking mouth; lamp rendered as stylized flame, strong red/yellow/green palette, decorative frame motifs echoing lotus and vine patterns.","pichwai_prompt":"Pichwai cloth painting style: symmetrical border-heavy composition with central dialogue vignette; deep background with gold floral motifs, lamp glow as a circular aureole, intricate lotus creepers framing the two figures."}

Audio Atmosphere: {"recitation_mood":"dramatic","suggested_raga":"Desh","pace":"moderate-narrative","voice_tone":"authoritative","sound_elements":["single conch note (soft)","lamp crackle","quiet breath pause","distant forest hush"]}

Sandhi Resolution Notes:

Mṛkaṇḍu

FAQs

Mṛkaṇḍu asks a wise person to state the exact number of years of someone’s life—whether few or many.

Mṛkaṇḍu is the questioner; the respondent is described generically as a jñānī (“wise/knowing person”), who then begins to reply.

The verse frames a reflective inquiry into lifespan and fate, setting up a teaching context where knowledge, karmic causality, and the limits of human life may be discussed.
