Lomaśa’s Counsel and the Resolve for Pilgrimage
tat puṇyaṃ paramaṃ brahma tat tīrthaṃ tat tapovanam | tat paraṃ paramaṃ devaṃ bhūtānāṃ parameśvaram |
The verse sacralizes a particular holy place by identifying it with ultimate reality (Brahman) and with the Supreme Lord (Parameśvara). It teaches that pilgrimage and ascetic spaces are not merely locations but embodiments of the highest divine principle, inspiring reverence, self-restraint, and dharmic conduct.
Dhaumya, speaking to the listeners in the forest narrative of the Vana Parva, praises and elevates the sanctity of the referenced sacred site, describing it as a tīrtha and tapovana and equating it with the supreme divine presence that governs all beings.
