Educational Q&A

A ruler and father must prioritize the welfare of the whole realm and family over a single heir’s obstinacy: accept equitable settlement with the Pāṇḍavas if possible, and if not, restrain the wrongdoing son to prevent collective ruin.

Vidura advises Dhṛtarāṣṭra that if Duryodhana willingly agrees to a shared sovereignty with the Pāṇḍavas, Dhṛtarāṣṭra will gain peace and joy; otherwise Dhṛtarāṣṭra should curb Duryodhana for the happiness and safety of the entire Kuru house.
