Shloka 17

तत्रोपसदन चक्रे द्रोणस्येष्वस्त्रकर्मणि । सख्यं दुर्योधनेनैवमगमत्‌ स च वीर्यवान्‌,वहाँ उसने धरनुर्वेदकी शिक्षा लेनेके लिये आचार्य द्रोणकी शिष्यता स्वीकार की। इस प्रकार पराक्रमी कर्णकी दुर्योधनके साथ मित्रता हो गयी

tatro'pasadanaṃ cakre droṇasyeṣv-astrakarmaṇi | sakhyaṃ duryodhanenaivam agamat sa ca vīryavān ||

هناك دخل رسميًّا في سلك التلمذة على يد دروṇa ليتعلّم فنون الرمي بالقوس وضروب استعمال الأسلحة القاذفة. وبهذا ارتبط كَرْنَةُ الشجاعُ برباط الصداقة مع دُريودَهَنَة—حلفٌ سيُشكِّل لاحقًا الولاءات وخيارات الضمير في خضمّ الصراع المقبل.
