Draupadī’s Identification and Counsel on Hospitality
adhigamya vyathāviṣṭaḥ karṇas tau pratyabhāṣata | duḥśāsanaṃ ca duryodhanaṃ caivaṃ duḥkhitau dṛṣṭvā karṇasya manasi mahān vyathā samabhavat | sa upagamya tayor ubhayor idam uvāca ||
The verse highlights the ethical duty of a companion to respond to others’ suffering with presence and counsel. Karṇa’s anguish on seeing his allies’ grief frames friendship as responsibility—one must not remain passive when those bound by loyalty are in distress.
Vaiśampāyana narrates that Karṇa, moved by the sorrow of Duḥśāsana and Duryodhana, approaches them and begins to speak. The verse functions as a transition into Karṇa’s forthcoming counsel or response within the Vana Parva episode.
