The Deer’s Dream-Appeal and the Move to Kāmyaka
Yudhiṣṭhira uvāca: śaraṇaṃ ca prapannānāṃ trāṇārthaṃ ca kulasya ca | uttiṣṭhata naravyāghrāḥ sajjībhavata mā ciram ||
A ruler and warrior community must protect those who seek refuge (śaraṇāgata-rakṣā) and uphold the honour and responsibility of the lineage; urgency and preparedness are ethical duties when protection is required.
Yudhiṣṭhira exhorts his companions—addressing them as ‘tigers among men’—to rise immediately and prepare for combat, framing the action as necessary to defend supplicants and to safeguard the family’s reputation.
