समाख्याहि मम ब्रद्मान्‌ कि सुखं चिरजीविनाम्‌ | इन्द्रने पूछा--महाभाग! देवता तथा ऋषियोंके समुदाय आपकी सेवामें उपस्थित रहते हैं। ब्रह्म! अब मुझसे फिर यह बताइये कि चिरजीवी मनुष्योंको क्या सुख मिलता है?

samākhyāhi mama brahman ki sukhaṁ cirajīvinām | indra uvāca |

قال إندرا (Indra): «يا براهمن، بيّن لي بوضوح: أيُّ سعادةٍ ينالها من يطول عمره؟» وفي سياق الحكاية، كان إندرا—إذ رأى الحكيم تحفّ به جموع الآلهة والريشيّين (ṛṣi) في خدمته—يستحثّ بيانًا أعمق عن ماهية الهناء في الحياة المديدة، مُلمِّحًا إلى أن طول العمر وحده ليس الخير الأعلى ما لم يقترن بالفهم القويم وبتمام الوفاء بالدَّهَرما (dharma).
