नौस्थश्न मां प्रतीक्षेथास्ततो मुनिजनप्रिय । आगमिष्याम्यहं शुद्भी विज्ञेयस्तेन तापस,“मुनिजनोंके प्रेमी तपस्वी नरेश! उस नावमें बैठे रहकर आप मेरी प्रतीक्षा कीजियेगा। मैं आपके पास अपने मस्तकमें सींग धारण किये आऊँगा। उसीसे आप मुझे पहचान लेंगे। इस प्रकार यह सब कार्य आपको करना है। अब मैं आपसे आज्ञा चाहता हूँ और यहाँसे जाता हूँ। उस महान् जलराशिको आपलोग मेरी सहायताके बिना पार नहीं कर सकेंगे
nausthaś ca māṃ pratīkṣethās tato munijanapriya | āgamiṣyāmy ahaṃ śṛṅgī vijñeyas tena tāpasa ||
قال ماركانديّا: «أيها الملك الزاهد، يا محبوبَ الحكماء، اثبت جالسًا في السفينة وانتظرني. سأعود وقد حملتُ قرنًا على رأسي؛ وبهذه العلامة ستعرفني. فافعل ذلك على وجهه. والآن أستأذنك وأغادر من هنا—فلن تقدروا على عبور هذا الامتداد الهائل من المياه دون معونتي.»
