Nārāyaṇopadeśa to Mārkaṇḍeya (Cosmic Self-Identification and Yuga Doctrine) |

nāśrotriyaṃ devahavye niyuñjyān moghaṃ purā siñcati tādṛśo hi | apūrvam aśrotriyam āha tārkṣya na vai tādṛg juhuyād agnihotram ||

Educational Q&A

Ritual acts meant for the gods require proper qualification—Vedic learning, discipline, and recognized standing. Without that competence, the act becomes ‘mogha’ (fruitless), so dharma demands appointing only a qualified śrotriya for such rites.

Tākṣya is giving a normative instruction about who may be engaged to perform offerings to the gods, stating that an aśrotriya is deemed ‘apūrva’ in this context and therefore should not perform the Agnihotra.
