Nārāyaṇopadeśa to Mārkaṇḍeya (Cosmic Self-Identification and Yuga Doctrine) |

Markaṇḍeya uvāca: anaḍvāhaṃ suvrataṃ yo dadāti halasya voḍhāram anantavīryam | dhurandharaṃ balavantaṃ yuvānaṃ prāpnoti lokān daśa dhenudasya ||

Educational Q&A

The verse teaches that charity is evaluated not only by sentiment but by practical benefit and suitability: donating a strong, well-trained draught bull—crucial for ploughing and carrying—earns exceptionally high merit, described as tenfold compared to cow-donation.

In Markaṇḍeya’s discourse on dharma and the fruits of gifts, he enumerates specific donations and their results. Here he highlights the donation of a capable working bull and states the superior heavenly reward it brings.
