Jāmadagnya Rāma’s Lament, Vow, Kṣatriya Suppression, and Gifts
तां कश्यपस्यानुमते ब्राह्मणा: खण्डशस्तदा । व्यभजंस्ते तदा राजन् प्रख्याता: खाण्डवायना:,राजन! उस समय कश्यपजीकी आज्ञासे ब्राह्मणोंने उस स्वर्णवेदीको खण्ड-खण्ड करके बाँट लिया, अत: वे खाण्डवायन नामसे प्रसिद्ध हुए
tāṁ kaśyapasyānumate brāhmaṇāḥ khaṇḍaśas tadā | vyabhajaṁs te tadā rājan prakhyātāḥ khāṇḍavāyanāḥ ||
أيها الملك! وبموافقة كاشيابا، عمدَ البراهمةُ في ذلك الحين إلى تكسير ذلك المذبح الذهبي قطعًا قطعًا، ثم اقتسموه فيما بينهم. ولذلك، أيها الملك، اشتهروا باسم «خاندافايانا».
राम उवाच
The verse highlights dharmic distribution: even valuable or sacred objects should be apportioned only with rightful consent (anumati). Legitimate permission safeguards ethical sharing and prevents appropriation, and such acts can shape social identity and lineage memory.
Rāma tells the king that, with Kaśyapa’s approval, the Brahmins broke a golden altar into pieces and divided it among themselves; from this event they came to be known as the Khāṇḍavāyanas.
