Surabhi–Indra Dialogue as a Governance Exemplar
भवांश्ष मन्यते साधु यत् कुरूणां महोदयम् । तदेव विदुरो<प्याह भीष्मो द्रोणश्न मां मुने,मुने! आप भी वही उत्तम मानते हैं जो कुरुवंशके महान् अभ्युदयका कारण है। मुने! यही बात विदुर, भीष्म और द्रोणाचार्यने भी मुझे कही है
dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca | bhavān hi manyate sādhu yat kurūṇāṁ mahodayam | tad eva viduro ’py āha bhīṣmo droṇaś ca māṁ mune ||
قال دِهْرِتَرَاشْتْرَا: «إنك حقًّا ترى أن خيرَ السُّبُلِ هو ما يُفضي إلى عظيمِ الرخاء ورفعةِ شأنِ سلالةِ الكورو. وقد أسدى إليَّ، أيها الحكيم، المشورةَ ذاتَها فيدورا وبهِيشْما ودرونا».
धृतराष्ट उवाच
Wise governance should prioritize the true welfare and uplift (mahodayam) of the dynasty and realm, and a ruler ought to heed consistent counsel from trusted elders and ministers rather than personal attachment or bias.
Dhṛtarāṣṭra addresses a sage, acknowledging that the sage’s view of what is ‘proper’ for the Kurus matches the earlier advice he received from Vidura, Bhīṣma, and Droṇa—highlighting that multiple authoritative voices have urged the same beneficial course.
