Sañjaya’s Report

sañjaya uvāca | citraḥ sūkṣmaḥ sukṛto yādavasya astre yogo vṛṣṇisiṃhasya bhūyān | yathāvidhaṃ yogam āhuḥ praśastaṃ sarvair guṇaiḥ sātyakis tair upetaḥ ||
Excellence in warfare is not mere possession of weapons but disciplined, subtle, well-practised mastery (astra-yoga) joined with the full set of warrior virtues (guṇa). The verse frames martial skill as something evaluated by standards of propriety and commendability, not as brute force alone.
Sañjaya is describing and praising Sātyaki (the Vṛṣṇi hero allied with the Pāṇḍavas), emphasizing that he has learned many superior weapons and that his weapon-discipline is remarkable, precise, and thoroughly practised—matching whatever the best warriors consider praiseworthy.
