Rukmī’s Offer of Aid and Arjuna’s Refusal (रुक्मिप्रस्तावः—अर्जुनप्रत्याख्यानम्)
bhavatā hi vayaṁ guptāḥ śakreṇeva divaukasaḥ | anādhṛṣyā bhaviṣyāmas tridāśānām api dhruvam ||
The verse highlights the ethical and practical power of rightful protection: when a leader provides steadfast guardianship, dependents gain stability and courage, becoming difficult to defeat. It implies that strength is amplified by trustworthy shelter and competent leadership.
A speaker (reported by Vaiśaṃpāyana) expresses confidence in being safeguarded by an addressed protector, comparing that protection to Indra’s guardianship of the gods. The statement functions as reassurance and persuasion within the alliance-building tensions of the Udyoga Parva.
