Svargārohaṇa-parva Adhyāya 5 — Karmaphala-Nirdeśa and Phalāśruti (कर्मफलनिर्देशः फलश्रुतिश्च)
karṇaputrāś ca vikrāntā rājā caiva jayadrathaḥ | ghaṭotkacādayaś caiva ye cānye nānukīrtitāḥ ||
The verse underscores the vast human cost of war and the limits of narration: even when major heroes are named, countless others remain unlisted. Ethically, it points to the sobering reality that fame and remembrance are partial, while the consequences of adharma-driven conflict extend far beyond the celebrated figures.
Janamejaya continues listing (or prompting the listing of) notable warriors connected with the Kurukṣetra war—Karṇa’s sons, King Jayadratha, Ghaṭotkaca, and many others not individually named—within the Svargārohaṇa context, where the fates and final reckonings of the epic’s figures are being recalled.
