Forest Discipline and the Program of Non-Attachment
gamane nirapekṣaḥ san paścād anavalokayan | ṛjuḥ praṇihito gacchaṁs trasaṁ sthāvara-varjakaḥ ||
The verse teaches disciplined detachment and non-violence: one should move through life without craving outcomes, without clinging to past or future, keeping the mind inwardly steady, and taking care not to harm any form of life—whether moving or stationary.
Yudhiṣṭhira articulates a resolve about how he will proceed: he will depart without personal agenda, not look back, maintain upright simplicity and inner focus, and walk with careful restraint so that his movement does not injure living beings.
