Enduring fame (yaśas) that continues among people is presented as a sign and support of an imperishable posthumous standing; therefore one should pursue dharmic conduct that leaves a lasting, beneficial memory in the world.
Vāyu is speaking as an authoritative voice, stating a general principle about how a person’s worldly renown relates to their lasting status after death, reinforcing the Shānti Parva’s moral instruction on right conduct and its consequences.
