वैशम्पायन उवाच
This line functions as a colophon marking the close of a didactic chapter in Āpaddharma: it frames the preceding narrative as an ethical exemplar meant to guide right conduct under distress, emphasizing that stories (upākhyānas) are used to clarify dharma in difficult circumstances.
The speaker, Vaiśampāyana, formally concludes the chapter: it states that within the Śānti Parva, in the Āpaddharma section, the chapter concerning the tale about Kṛtadhna has ended.
