Duryodhana’s Description of Tribute at the Rājasūya
ko hi nāma pumāṁl loke marṣayiṣyati sattvavān | sapatnān ṛddhayato dṛṣṭvā hīnam ātmānam eva ca ||
The verse exposes how pride and the warrior-code of honor can be twisted into impatience and envy: Duryodhana frames intolerance of others’ success and one’s own perceived decline as ‘natural’ for a strong man, revealing the ethical danger of letting status-anxiety govern judgment.
In the Sabha Parva’s courtly-political setting, Duryodhana voices his agitation at seeing his opponents (implicitly the Pandavas) rise in prosperity while he feels comparatively diminished, using this as a justification for not remaining passive and for pressing forward with hostile action.
