Jarāsandha’s fall, liberation of kings, and request for support
सैन्यं सैन्येन व्यूढेन एक एकेन वा पुनः । द्वाभ्यां त्रिभिरवा योत्स्येडहं युगपत् पृथगेव वा
sainyaṁ sainyena vyūḍhena eka ekena vā punaḥ | dvābhyāṁ tribhir avā yotsye 'haṁ yugapat pṛthag eva vā ||
وأعلن جاراسنده في كبرياء: «لتقاتل جيوشكم جيوشي المصطفّة في تشكيل القتال؛ أو إن شئتم فليخرج واحدٌ منكم فيبارزني وحدي. بل إنني مستعدٌّ أن أقاتل اثنين أو ثلاثة منكم—متتابعين أو جميعًا في آنٍ واحد.»
जरासंध उवाच
The verse highlights the kṣatriya ideal of accepting combat under declared terms—whether as massed battle or single combat—while also warning, through Jarāsandha’s tone, how valor can slide into overconfidence and domination.
Jarāsandha issues a direct challenge, offering multiple modes of fighting: army versus army in formation, a single champion against him, or even two or three opponents against him either sequentially or simultaneously—asserting his strength and control over the contest.
