Educational Q&A

The verse highlights a recurring Mahābhārata ethic: collective power without dharma becomes fragile. When a cause is rooted in injustice and sustained by violence, it tends toward strategic and moral isolation—symbolized here by being pressed from all sides—leading to collapse.

Sañjaya reports to Dhṛtarāṣṭra that the Kaurava host has come under pressure from every direction on the battlefield. The phrasing suggests a tactical situation where the Dhārtarāṣṭra forces are surrounded or heavily attacked, indicating a turning point of distress for their army.
