Educational Q&A

The verse highlights ethical speech in a martial context: Śalya insists on the freedom to speak frankly, guided by his inner conviction, even before a great warrior. It frames counsel as something that must be honest rather than merely pleasing.

Śalya sets a condition regarding Karna (Vaikartana): if Karna accepts it, Śalya will speak openly in Karna’s presence, saying whatever he feels compelled to say. This prepares the ground for sharp, candid remarks amid the tensions of the war.
