Educational Q&A

The verse highlights how vows (like those of the Saṁśaptakas) and allegiance to elite forces (the Nārāyaṇī troops) intensify warfare, pressing warriors into uncompromising action. Ethically, it points to the tension between kṣatriya-dharma (duty to fight) and the tragic reality of mass killing that such duty can entail.

Sanjaya reports that the mighty warrior—contextually Arjuna—is devastating the southern sector of the opposing army, killing the survivors of the Saṁśaptaka band and also the soldiers of the Nārāyaṇī force.
