Educational Q&A

The verse highlights how fear and disorder in war create a collective moral and psychological collapse: when warriors abandon steadiness, the consequences spread beyond individuals, symbolically ‘covering’ the whole world with panic and lamentation.

Sañjaya reports that, after a turn in the fighting, elephants, chariots, horses, and kings flee in fear, producing a massive, terrifying uproar that seems to fill the entire battlefield and resound through earth, sky, heaven, and all directions.
